Autism (ASD) Assessment

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition characterized by challenges in social interaction, understanding social cues, and communication. It may also present with repetitive behaviours or unusual interests or beliefs. The symptoms associated with autism can vary widely in both range and intensity from individual to individual, which is why it is referred to as a “spectrum.”

An autism assessment typically includes several components to evaluate an individual’s social, communication, and behavioural skills.

An in-depth interview with parents or caregivers will be conducted to gather insights about your child’s behaviour, social interactions, communication, developmental milestones, medical history, and family history to understand the context of their behaviour and any concerns they may have.

Parents, caregivers, and sometimes teachers may be asked to complete standardized questionnaires and a checklist.

Standardized tests, including the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), will be used to evaluate the individual’s cognitive abilities, language skills, and overall functioning. Assessment batteries may include evaluating how the individual processes sensory information, as many individuals with autism experience sensory sensitivities or behavioural particularities.

• Feedback Session: After the assessment, we will provide a comprehensive explanation of the report and any diagnoses. This will help you understand how the results may affect your child’s learning, worldview, and social interactions. Each psychoeducational assessment has tailored recommendations for creating an effective Individual Education Plan (IEP), highlighting necessary accommodations and interventions.
• Parent Advocacy: Bayridge offers valuable support for parents navigating the challenges of assessment and diagnosis. Included in our services, we provide a workshop and individual sessions with a parent advocate. These resources are designed to help you and your child through what can often be a confusing journey. We recognize that receiving assessment results can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to face it alone.
