What is Trauma?
Trauma is a natural emotional response to an upsetting, devastating, or life-endangering event, whether it be something that occurs one time or many times over the course of a person’s life.
Experiencing trauma and coming out the other side alive requires great mental resilience, but recovering from the event requires resilience, too. When a person experiences events that make them traumatized, they respond with varying degrees of symptoms, and everyone’s experience is different. Some symptoms of trauma include:
- Flashbacks
- Sensitivity to noises
- Mood swings
- Difficulty concentrating
- Memory issues
- Anxiety
Healthy Coping Mechanisms for Trauma
If you want to work on recovering after experiencing a traumatic event, understand that it is a lifelong process; there is no start line, finish line, average rate of progression, or date (or age) that’s too late to start.
Across the board, trauma survivors discover solutions for healing at various stages in their lives, at varying points after they’ve experienced the trauma and brought themselves to a safe environment. If you want to learn some coping mechanisms for how to handle your trauma, consider these tips:
- Understand that it’s not your fault: Trauma often lends itself to a substantial sense of guilt. Overcome your internalized guilt by realizing that you didn’t ask for the trauma; it happened to you. Part of your recovery process is to understand that you had no responsibility to deflect this trauma or any ability to prevent it.
- Communicate openly and comfortably: Learn how to communicate with your friends and family, especially if you have trouble doing so. Find people you can talk to without judgment, and take any offer they give you to allow yourself to talk about your trauma if you feel so inclined.
- Grieve: Trauma takes years off someone’s life, warping perception and causing fear-fueled decision-making. If you need to grieve, the person you could have been, the people in your life that you could have had, grieve. Without properly mourning what you’ve lost, healing cannot possibly proceed.
