Virtual assessment

Virtual Assessments

A full assessment without the drive. Conducted entirely online, so distance from a clinic or a long local waitlist stops deciding whether you get answers.

How a virtual assessment works

A virtual assessment is a full psychoeducational assessment conducted online. It makes it easier for people in remote areas of Ontario, or facing long wait times, to get the assessment they need, without travelling to a clinic.

The testing itself is not a lighter version. Standardized instruments have to be administered under controlled conditions, which is why there is a calibration session, why a second camera angle is required, and why some batteries travel to you by courier and go straight back sealed.

If a virtual setup is not realistic (equipment, connectivity, or a child who will not settle in front of a screen), an in-home assessment brings a psychometrist and all the materials to you instead.

What you need to take part

Virtual testing has to be set up properly to stay standardized. We confirm all of this with you before a testing date is booked.

Age 8 and over

We currently accept clients aged eight years and older for virtual assessments.

A screen over 10 inches

A computer or tablet, not a phone.

A strong internet connection

A reliable connection for the length of each testing session.

A quiet room with a sizeable table

A distraction-free space with room to lay out materials.

A second camera angle

A way to set a phone camera beside or behind you, such as a tripod, so the psychometrist can see the working area.

How it works

What the process looks like

1

Clinical interview

We review your submitted questionnaire and gather developmental, medical, family, academic and social-emotional history, reading report cards, Individual Education Plans and previous assessments alongside it.

2

Setup and calibration session

Before the first testing session, our psychometrist runs an orientation and calibration meeting to confirm the room and equipment are set up correctly. A video is provided beforehand so you can gather what you need in advance.

3

Testing

Testing is conducted online. Some assessment batteries are couriered to you, opened and administered during the session, then sealed and couriered back to the clinic in prepaid envelopes, which is how standardized materials stay secure.

4

Analysis

Scoring and interpretation, report writing, summaries, recommendations and any warranted diagnoses by the psychologist.

5

Feedback session

A full explanation of the report and any diagnoses, including how to read it and how the results may affect learning, worldview and social interactions, with recommendations for an effective Individual Education Plan.

6

Parent advocacy

A workshop and individual sessions with a parent advocate, included in the service.

Named, credentialed people behind your report

Testing is administered by a psychometrist and supervised, reviewed and signed by a psychologist.
