Neural Pathway Integration

  • Sensory Integration
  • Emotional Regulation Training
  • Mindfulness Training
  • Emotional Intelligence Reporting

It trains the brain and body to remain calm. It works to build and strengthen neurological pathways in the brain that contribute to focus, attention, relaxation and de-escalation, while rewarding behaviours that are important for self-control and emotional regulation.

Behaviours that Struggling Kids
and Teens Exhibit

  • Unable to calm down effectively.
  • Quickly becomes upset or angry without the ability to understand why.
  • Live in their own little world.
  • Not listening.
  • Not following through on simple tasks.
  • Does not respond to time-outs or consequences.
  • Argue or disruptive behaviours.
  • Resists most things.
  • Deadlines are never met.
  • Poor choices with friends

The Bayridge Kids Program Is Not Another Parenting Style.

Participants use a variety of training circuits in each session, which are fun, challenging and effective. The circuits utilize multi-modal interventions that promote cross-brain-lobe activation to improve neural connectivity and foster emotional development.

Targeted outcomes include:

  • Improved focus, attention, and impulse control
  • Improved emotional regulation
  • Improved emotional intelligence
  • Improved working memory

Our program can help all kids and teens!

Circuit 1 – Sensory Integration

This circuit incorporates multiple senses at once, including the visual, vestibular, fine/gross motor, and auditory systems, to build brain connectivity and resilience. Impulse control and action inhibition are trained in sensory integration. We utilize a hover board, laser targets, drones, and other fun pieces of technology to get the kids engaged.

Circuit 2 – Emotional Regulation Training

Here kids train to go from highly excited and anxious states to consistently calm and focused behaviour. This repetition is highly strategic and methodical, but in an incredibly entertaining modality. We utilize a trampoline to simulate what the body goes through in situations of emotional escalation and then a Heart Rate Variability (bio feedback) video game to train the child to consistently calm back down.

Circuit 3 – Mindfulness Training

Through guided meditation, which is also assisted by providing the child’s brain with specific neurological frequencies, children learn to truly understand what their body is doing during states of arousal and escalation right back down to a calm meditation state. Subsequently, with training the child gains the tools to self-regulate in the future on their own.

Circuit 4- Emotional Intelligence Reporting

This form of self-reporting is a valuable skill that teaches and allows the child to understand not only what they are feeling, but also why they are feeling a certain emotion. Ultimately, this circuit truly empowers the child as they understand that they have the power to change their emotional states.

ADHD

Trying to understand what causes ADHD can be like trying to understand what caused a cold or other illness. This can be a combination of genetic, developmental, neurological, physical, and environmental influences. While there is some insight into causes, ultimately the symptoms have to be managed or treated in order to recover or foster a noticeable change.

A parent’s struggle to do all they can for their children can be overwhelming; without having to worry about labels. When a teacher or doctor suggests that their child may have problems with focus and attention there are many questions that could arise. A common question is “Does my child have ADD or ADHD?”

The answer to this question is a bit complex. ADD is no longer a recognized diagnosis on its own; not because it does not exist, but because it is now considered a subtype of ADHD, specifically the predominantly inattentive subtype.

Before this change, those diagnosed as specifically ADHD were distinguished by the physical inability to remain still or calm and being inappropriately restless, squirmy, or fidgety. These kids are often thought of as being always on the go and constantly moving even when there is no need for movement. Currently, ADHD can be diagnosed with the recognized subtypes of predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive/impulsive, and combined (which has traits of both inattentive and hyperactive/compulsive).

Parents genuinely want to help their struggling and frustrated child in every way possible. Giving their child the best chance at a successful and stress-free life is always a driving factor behind everything parents do. To truly help an ADHD child, one needs to look at the brain and the body. There has to be an understanding that goes further than the label of a diagnosis. A treatment plan that works on the neurology behind the symptoms and training that addresses the negative behaviours involved must be implemented to truly help these struggling kids.

Emotional & Behavioural Issues

After meeting many families that are affected by a child’s emotional dysregulation, there are some common elements that are prevalent. Most symptoms of behavioural problems present themselves in a child’s anger, aggression, frustration, and inappropriate emotional responses. These responses can be seen as blow-ups or tantrums which may or may not include physical escalation.

Many parents feel that although their child can behave at home they are quite different at school. To understand what is truly happening here may need a more “whole”istic approach. A child’s frustration in the learning environment can lead to behavioural issues. Parents should look to ensure that the educational environment is specific enough and nurturing for their child’s unique needs. To understand their unique needs a parent may need to consider a Comprehensive Educational Assessment, after which a tailored therapeutic intervention and/or classroom recommendations can be made.

It can be completely normal for a preschooler to become aggressive (it’s natural, especially when they are just understanding what a feeling, well, feels like); however, the way the child deals with the aggression or acts upon it is where training and parenting will help avoid unwanted, inappropriate, and negative behaviours. Perseverance and perhaps a shift in the parenting approach may be warranted.

Sensory Processing Disorder

This disorder can be a frustrating one to truly understand, but many parents need only to focus on the symptoms associated with it and work to help their child overcome these problems. Temper tantrums, frustrations not linked to anything in particular, and poor grades are common elements to sensory problems. Daily functioning can be incredibly aggravating for kids. Their perceptions are muted sights and sounds, and it can literally feel as if a shade was pulled over the outside world. Alternatively, feelings of frequent sensory overload can also be commonplace.

There are typically three patterns of sensory processing disorder: over-responsiveness, which is responding more than normal or with too much emotion to a stimulus; under-responsiveness, which is responding less than normal or with too little emotion to a stimulus; and sensory seeking behaviours (common in ADHD and autism), which is always searching for something to grab, play with, touch, or feel.

Calming a child down that is in the middle of a tantrum or aggressive emotional state can be rather scary and can leave parents feeling incredibly frustrated and hopeless. The key to effectively managing these kinds of situations is perseverance and patience. Allow the child to breathe and recover with as much time they need. Make sure the child is safe and respond appropriately. The hardest strategy to learn is that of not reacting, but rather letting the tantrum take its natural course to completion. Finally, reflect in hindsight and try to understand why the outburst happened.

"For Some Children Their Neural Pathways can Look Like Arthritic Traffic Jams."

We Re-organize Neural Pathways Within Your Child

For some children their neural pathways can look like arthritic traffic jams we see everyday in Rome, China or third world countries where who-ever comes first gets the right of way. But more often than not there are paralyzing stoppages and extensive waits just to travel a few yards.

Bayridge Kids Program:

  • Once we can initiate movement, we begin to see momentum.
  • Once we see momentum, we begin to see motivation.
  • Once we see motivation, we then begin to see maturity forming naturally!

Child's Success: It Must be Measurable.

Bayridge Kids Program Core Principles

  • We believe your child’s brain can heal itself through making new or stronger neurological connections.
  • We believe that if we focus on specific executive functions, we can turn sawdust trails into six lane highways.
  • We do this by engaging areas of the child’s brain through specific training
  • To have full engagement with a child it must be fun.
  • It must be scalable in its skill levels
  • It must be measurable

“Just imagine how wonderful it would be to capture the energy of your child’s mind in order to channel it towards academics and success.”

“Most of us parents do not want to fail our children. We sincerely want to do what-ever it takes to give our children not only an advantage but a great foundation for a great life.”

What would it be like if there was more peace in your home? Just think of what it would be like to no longer worry that your child will be able to enjoy a full social life. Think of what it would be like to actually be confident in knowing how to develop effective strategies to help your child. Just imagine how wonderful it would be to capture the energy of your child’s mind in order to channel it towards academics and success.

Success Stories

Parent Testimonials

“My son did the NPI program with Nathan and had an absolute blast. He loved learning to ride the hoverboard and I was able to watch him successfully navigate a seadoo in a video game all through controlling his breathing while learning to stay calm.

The best part of the program was that my son was learning critical skills to manage his emotions in a fun and interactive way that kept him engaged.”

Jonathan

“The NPI program at Bayridge was a unique and challenging program for my son.

We sought out services at Bayridge, because he was having difficulty remaining or returning to calm in various situations.

We found everyone welcoming and very accommodating to our needs.

My son’s therapist Nathan used many strategies including technologically based games to make each session fun, while he was learning to gain better control over his body. Since the 12-week program my son does admit that the NPI program “helped with calming down and keeping hands to myself easier.” So far, the new school year is going great.”

Nicole

“Hi Nathan, We are writing a quick email to let you know how happy we are to have had you include our son in your Neural Pathways Integration program.

He was hesitant and I thought he might be too much of a challenge.

He has gained confidence, and self control from attending the Bayridge Kids program.

We couldn’t be happier. We were so excited to let you know, Jake has NEVER attended camp, his anxiety got the best of him and missed out on many summers, however, after working hard with you he attended for the first time this summer and his words “why didn’t I go sooner” was a proud moment in our lives to see that growth.”
